1935 Peace Dollar

The last official year of the Peace dollars series was in 1935, a time that saw the United States still lumbering under the weight of the Great Depression. The United States Mint would supply around 3.5 million Peace dollars that year, but that number was nowhere near the higher mintages of a decade earlier, back when the Roaring 20s, as a decade, was hitting its high note.

A breakdown of the Peace dollar production numbers from 1935 shows that 1,576,000 were struck at the Philadelphia mint while 1,964,000 rolled off the presses at the San Francisco mint. None were made that year in Denver. While mintages for 1935 dollars is decidedly lower than the mintages of years earlier, values aren’t esoteric. In fact, they are much in line with the prices of most other Peace dollars from the late 1920s and 1934, the latter being the only other year Peace dollars were minted in the 1930s. Expect to pay about $30 for either a 1935 or 1935-S in Very Fine condition. However, in Mint State grades, Peace dollars being to soar in price. A 1935 commands $100 in MS-60, while a 1935-S costs $265 in MS-60.

You’ll notice that virtually all coin price guides denote 1935 as the last year Peace dollars were produced. In fact, on May 12, 1965, the Denver mint began striking Peace dollars dated 1964-D as trial pieces in anticipation of a re-launch of the dollar coin denomination. However, orders were quickly rescinded, and it is believed that all 316,076 1964-D Peace dollars were melted, though there are rumors that some may still exist; these would be illegal to own.
