After increasing production figures every year for the Washington quarter since its inception in 1932, the United States Mint made significantly fewer quarters in 1937. Less than 30 million were made, to be precise. Demand from the public had been largely fulfilled with the previous years’ Washington quarters, and with the United States still reeling from the economic effects of the Great Depression, there was little need to produce 40 or 50 million of these high-denomination coins.

That being said, 1937 Washington quarters are generally considered as common coins by numismatists, especially in the lower grades. One exception is the 1937 doubled-die obverse Washington quarter, which is quite rare and sought after by coin collectors. Another asterisk to that comment would be the 1937-S, which is a semi-key coin.

Below is a breakdown of mintages and values of 1937 Washington quarters:

  • 1937, 19,696,000 minted; $8

  • 1937 proof, 5,542; $800

  • 1937 doubled die obverse, unknown mintage, $750

  • 1937-D, 7,189,600; $18

  • 1937-S, 1,652,000; $40

*Values are for coins in a grade of Extremely Fine-40, unless otherwise noted.

As always, be sure to seek specimens with sharp strike and nice surfaces when you are looking to buy any 1937 Washington quarters. Premium-quality 1937 quarters may bring handsome returns when the time comes to sell your coins down the line.
