After a prolonged hiatus that began in 1930, Walking Liberty half dollars would again see the light of day at the United States Mint in 1933. Economic effects from the Great Depression suppressed the need for high-denomination coins during the first years of the 1930s, but the a need for half dollars sprang as 1933 came around, and that year would mark the end of break times for the series. However, only San Francisco minted Walking Liberty half dollars in 1933, and very few were made.

1,786,000 half dollars were made in 1933, though despite the smallish mintage figure, prices aren’t terribly high for this issue. In fact, even in the grade of XF-40 – an elusive grade for virtually all early Walking Liberty halves – 1933 Walking Liberty half dollars are relatively affordable; an XF-40 Walker from 1933 costs less than $80. Prices are certainly much lower for an example in the grade of Good-4, at under $15.

Obtaining nicer examples of this issue should be a top priority for any Walking Liberty half dollar aficionado, and can be done with a little extra searching. Sharp, problem-free 1933 Walking Liberty halves can enhance any coin collection and almost always offer a favorable return on investment when they are sold.
