1927 Standing Liberty Quarter

While 1926 provided little in the way for coin collectors to get excited about, 1927 was a different store. The last year to field any semi-key dates in the series, 1927 Standing Liberty quarters have something for just about everyone - a common issue, a semi-key that is easily affordable, and a semi-key that requires a few bucks (figuratively) to buy. Let’s start with the 1927 Philadelphia issue, which is easily considered a common date and can be had for the price of a typical 1925-1930 Standing Liberty date. The two branch-mint issues, on the other hand, are far scarcer, with less than 1.4 million pieces minted combined.

Here’s a breakdown of the mintages and values of 1927 Standing Liberty quarters:

• 1927 – 11,912,000; $9

• 1927-D – 976,000; $25

• 1927-S – 396,000; $60

Bear in mind when considering the values above that they concern only Standing Liberty quarters in Good-4. While prices don’t increase all that quickly from Good-4 through uncirculated for the 1927 Philadelphia, quite the opposite is true for both of the branch mints. The price of the 1927-S, particularly, defies gravity and ascends in value to around $5,000 for a piece in Mint State-60, as compared to only $350 for a 1927-D in the same grade and about $200 for a 1927.
