1923 Standing Liberty Quarter
Coin Info
After a hiatus in 1922, Standing Liberty quarters resumed production in 1923, and in a way not seen since 1920, when multiple millions of quarters were minted. Granted, 1923 quarters are not as numerous as their 1918 counterparts or most of the post-1924 issues, and this is quite evident in the case of the 1923-S, which is a considered a key coin. Nevertheless, you can buy an example from 1923 without having to drop tons of cash in doing so.
Here’s a glance at the mintages and values of 1923 Standing Liberty quarters:
-
1923 – 9,716,000; $25
-
1923-S – 1,360,000; $300
*Values are for coins in a grade of Good-4.
Type collectors will clamor toward the 1923 issue from Philadelphia, which nearly broke the 10 million mark and is rather affordable at around $25 for an example in Good-4. The 1923-S, on the other hand, is a truly scarce coin.
Avoid the potential issue of added mintmarks or altered surfaces and buy a 1923-S in a sonically sealed slab from a reputable third-party coin grader. Authentic 1923-S quarters with honest wear and clean (not cleaned) surfaces make terrific purchases and can make a fantastic addition to a Standing Liberty quarter series collection or any assemblage of United States silver coins.
