1949 Roosevelt Dime
Coin Info
1949 Roosevelt dimes are an affordable and popular collectible for numismatists who enjoy 20th century U.S. silver coins. First minted in 1946 and designed by John R. Sinnock, the same man who designed the Franklin half dollar in 1948, Roosevelt dimes honor our nation’s 32nd president, who died in 1945 of polio while serving in office during the end of World War II. The dime is a fitting tribute to Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who started the March of Dimes to help fight polio.
To meet the high demand for the Roosevelt dime, the U.S. Mint struck tens of millions of dimes during the late 1940s. The mintages of the 1949 Roosevelt dime can be found below:
-
1949 – 30,940,000; $3.50
-
1949-D – 26,034,000; $3.50
-
1949-S – 13,510,000; $6
*Values are for coins in a grade of Extremely Fine 40.
While the 1949 and 1949-D Roosevelt dimes are generally considered common by numismatists, the 1949-S is regarded as a semi-key coin, given a mintage figure that is substantially lower than most of the other regular-issue Roosevelt dimes of the era. Still, one can find a large array of 1949-S Roosevelt dimes today and should be able to find a specimen that suits their budget.
