1924 Peace Dollar
Coin Info
1924 Peace dollars are among the more common in the 1921-1935 silver dollar series. However, 1924 silver silvers are much less common than the 1922 and 1923 dates that proliferate in roll offerings and in bullion portfolios. In 1924, Peace dollars were struck only at the Philadelphia and San Francisco mints; in fact, the 1924-S Peace dollar is widely considered a semi-key date coin, with only 1,728,000 originally minted, and certainly fewer surviving today. The Philadelphia issue, on the other hand, is much more common, with 11,811,000 pieces struck in 1924.
Neither the 1924 nor 1924-S is considerably pricey in the lower grades, at about $20 to $30 each for one somewhere in the moderately worn grades (with silver at a spot price of $20). However, the 1924 (Philadelphia) is worth only about $30 in uncirculated, while the 1924-S in Mint State-60 commands a figure of about $300.
Be sure that when you are shopping around for 1924 Peace dollars that you avoid cleaned or damaged pieces, which proliferate in the marketplace. It’s better to take a little extra time when searching and find some really nice pieces that you’ll be content with having in your collection (and likely to bring in a nice return with when the time comes to sell) than to make a hasty purchase that you will look back on and wish you had not made.
