The 1880 Morgan Silver Dollar has more major attributed die varieties in the Morgan Silver Dollar series than either the 1878 or the 1879 Morgan Dollars. However, the 1880 Morgan Dollar is also the last year in the series for which there are major noted variations in the number of tail feathers counted on the eagle.

The 1880 Morgan Silver Dollar was produced in four mints: Carson City, New Orleans, Philadelphia, and San Francisco. The most valuable 1880 Morgan Silver Dollar carries the "CC" mintmark used by the Carson City Mint. It always carries a premium value because of very low production, making it the rarest 1880 Morgan Dollar. The Denver Mint used a "D", the New Orleans Mint an "O", and the San Francisco Mint an "S”. The main mint in Philadelphia did not use a mintmark. Proof examples of Morgan Dollars from all years, including 1880, are rare which makes them expensive.

Van Allen and A. George Mallis) varieties have found many more die variations and often catalog the values of these separately.
