1927 Mercury Dime

More than 37 million Mercury dimes were struck in 1927, with a huge number of these coming from the Philadelphia mint. The Denver and San Francisco mints produced much smaller numbers that year, creating a more challenging situation for coin collectors who want uncirculated specimens of those two issues.

You can get a good idea of the scarceness of the two branch mint issues from the mintage figures below:

• 1927, 28,080,000 minted; $4

• 1927-D, 4,812,000; $5

• 1927-S, 4,770,000; $5

While low-grade examples can be purchased for prices that are very close to bullion values, the higher-grade pieces are somewhat more expensive. Philadelphia issues in MS-63 are worth around $65. Denver and San Francisco issues in that same grade are substantially more expensive, at $400 and $550 respectively.

When buying any uncirculated 1927 Mercury dimes, be sure to purchase well-struck specimens that exhibit great strike, color, and overall eye appeal. Be choosy when it comes to buying any pre-1934 Mercury dimes, as there are great specimens to be had, but they are sometimes few and far between. FSB (Fully Split Band) Mercury dime specimens cost a premium, but those are the best-looking pieces and could bring a handsome return on your investment should you decide to sell your 1927 Mercury dimes later on.
