1870 Liberty Head $10 gold eagles are extremely scarce coins, with relatively few surviving specimens today. Perhaps most notable of 1870 gold eagle coinage is the Carson City issue, which will be detailed below but can be introduced here as simply one of the rarest Liberty Head $10 gold coins ever produced. 1870 $10 gold eagle coins contain 0.4806 ounces of gold, though needless to say in the especially in the instance of the 1870-CC $10 gold coin, these issues are much more important as numismatic treasures than bullion coins.
These classic old U.S. gold coins were designed by United States Mint Chief Engraver Christian Gobrecht, who was the third person to serve in that role. In addition to designing the Liberty Head eagle, which was first minted in 1838, he also designed Seated Liberty coinage, which was struck from the late 1830s through early 1890s and remains popular with numismatists nowadays.
