1863 Liberty Head $10 gold eagles are extremely scarce coins, as very few were originally made. These classic U.S. gold coins were designed by United States Mint Chief Engraver Christian Gobrecht. In addition to designing the 1863 Liberty Head eagles coins, Gobrecht designed Seated Liberty coinage, which was struck from the late 1830s through early 1890s and remains popular with numismatists nowadays.

1863 $10 gold eagle coins contain 0.4806 ounces of gold and are valuable to bullion investors for their intrinsic metal content. However, these coins receive much more attention as numismatic collectibles and are worth far more than their gold content alone. Here’s a glance at the 1863 Liberty Head gold eagle $10 coin mintage figures and values:

  • 1863, 1,248 minted; $12,500

  • 1863-S, 10,000; $5,000

*Values are for coins grading Very Fine 20.

It should be noted that the mintage figures above are actually much higher than the number of currently existing specimens of either 1863 $10 gold coin. The Philadelphia issue in particular is extraordinarily scarce and, for buyer peace of mind, should only be purchased certified and slabbed by a third-party coin grading company. That’s a great rule of thumb to follow for all pre-1933 U.S. gold coins, which are significantly scarce across all dates and grades.
