Coin Info
1850 Liberty Head $10 gold coins were made in rather small numbers. Therefore, they remain difficult to find today. These classic U.S. gold coins were designed by Christian Gobrecht. He served as the third Chief Engraver of the United States Mint and also designed Seated Liberty coinage, which was made generally from the late 1830s through early 1890s.
1850 $10 coins contain 0.4806 ounces of gold but, due to their overall scarceness, are worth more than the price of gold itself. Here’s a look at the 1850 Liberty Head gold eagle $10 coin mintage and values:
-
1850 large date, 291,451 minted; $1,639
-
1850 small date, mintage included above; $1,705
-
1850-O, 57,500; $1,967
*Values are for coins grading Very Fine 20.
The mintage figures listed above are much higher than existing populations of these coins today. This is quite common with many pre-1933 U.S. gold coins in general due to melting. Given the overall scarceness of many pre-1933 U.S. gold coins, such as 1850 $10 eagles, it’s suggested that they are bought certified from reputable third-party coin grading firms or, if purchased “raw,” from trusted coin dealers or bullion distributors.
