1863 Indian Princess Large Head gold dollars are popular, scarce collectibles among coin hobbyists who enjoy pre-1933 U.S. gold coins. While the gold dollar mainly circulated in the western United States, which is where gold was plentiful during the Gold Rush heyday of the 1840s and 1850s, they attract collectors from all around. In addition to their presence as circulating coins, they also were popularly given as holiday gifts. Many of these coins were therefore spared years of hard use in circulation and thus are often available in better grades. Some, however, wound up in jewelry such as necklaces and bracelets. Therefore, some of these coins exhibit damage, especially on their rims and edges, which are most susceptible to nicks and bruises that are imparted during the encasement process.

1863 gold dollar coins were minted only at the Philadelphia mint, though both business-strike pieces and proof coins were made. Here is a breakdown on the mintages and values of these coins:

  • 1863, 6,200 minted; $2,300

  • 1863 proof, 50; $10,000

*Values are for coins grading Extremely Fine-40, unless otherwise noted.

Since 1863 gold dollars are rather small in dimension – just 15 millimeters in diameter – these coins contain a relatively tiny amount of gold. In all, each contains just 0.04837 ounces of gold. Additionally, these coins have substantial numismatic value, which means they have comparatively high premiums as compared to their spot value. This makes Indian Princess Large Head gold dollars relatively unaffordable for diehard bullion investors who are simply looking for the lowest premiums possible on their gold coins.

1862 gold dollars were designed by United States Mint Chief Engraver James B. Longacre. He designed many low-denomination United States coins originating in the mid 19th century, including the Flying Eagle cent (produced from 1856-1858), Indian Head cent (1859-1909), two-cent piece (1864-1873), various silver and nickel three-cent coins (1851-1889), and the Shield nickel (1866-1883).
