Top 25 Most Valuable Lincoln Cents Sold on eBay in April 2015

Top 25 Most Valuable Lincoln Cents Sold on eBay in April 2015

Lincoln cents are one of the most popular collector coins around, and some of the most valuable pennies in the series traded hands on eBay in April 2015. The 25 most expensive Lincoln cents that were sold on eBay include the usual key date suspects, including the 1909-S VDB, 1914-D, and 1955 doubled die Lincoln cents. Also among the list of the most valuable Lincoln cents to be sold on eBay in April 2015 are a number of high-grade common dates, pristine proofs, and other interesting pieces.

Below is a rundown of the top 25 most expensive Lincoln cents sold on eBay in April 2015:

#1 -- 1955 Doubled Die Lincoln Cent, NGC MS 64 RB CAC Designated, $5,105.00

It’s little surprise that the first coin on this list of the top 25 most expensive Lincoln cents sold on eBay in April 2015 is the 1955 doubled die penny. It’s actually one of the most expensive, commonly collected Lincoln wheat cents, even beating out the 1909-S VDB Lincoln cent in circulated and lower uncirculated grades. It seems 1955 doubled die Lincoln pennies are normally found with at least traces of brown, just as this one has.

#2 -- 1909-S VDB Lincoln Cent, PCGS MS 65 Red CAC Designated, $4,131.00

If the 1955 doubled die Lincoln cent tops the most expensive penny list, this scarce, popular piece is never far behind. This 1909-S VDB cent has superb eye appeal, great strike, and is overall a high-quality coin. It’s also in a Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS), so most coin collectors would feel pretty confident that this coin is possibly even under graded by most other standards.

#3 -- 1914-D Lincoln Cent PCGS MS 64 RB, $3,700.00

It looks like three consecutive Lincoln cent key date coins in a row here, with this 1914-D penny. In many respects, the 1914-D penny is a much scarcer coin in the higher grades than some collectors would think. For that reason, all choice uncirculated 1914-D Lincoln cents are true numismatic treasures.

#4 -- 1930-S Lincoln Cent NGC MS 67 Red, $3,400.00

While the 1930-S Lincoln cent is basically a common coin by date, in this super-nice grade of Mint State 67 it’s a real gem and certainly a great registry set candidate. Pre-1934 mintmarked Lincoln cents in choice uncirculated grades are exceedingly scarce.

#5 -- 1909-S VDB Lincoln Cent NGC MS 65 Red, $3,169.00

This 1909-S VDB Lincoln cent is in an old Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) holder. What significance does that mean? It’s less a matter of history or nostalgia and more a situation in that older NGC coins often have a reputation for having been graded more conservatively than they might be today. Thus, some bidders probably dropped a tad more money on this coin than a similar one in a newer NGC slab on the assumption that this coin might have crack-out, upgrading potential.

#6 -- 1955 Doubled Die Lincoln Cent PCGS MS 64 Brown, $3,000.00

Here’s a nice, chocolate brown 1955 doubled die Lincoln cent. In a PCGS slab with a solid grade like MS 64, it would be really hard for the financially capable Lincoln cent connoisseur to pass up a nice coin such as this one.

#7 -- 1930-S Lincoln Cent NGC MS 67 Red, $3,000.00

Another 1930-S, NGC-slabbed, MS 67 popped up on this list of the top 25 most valuable Lincoln cents sold on eBay in April 2015. This one, like the other, is a true stunner, though sold for a few hundred dollars less due to any number of possible factors, including timing.

#8 -- 1955 Doubled Die PCGS MS 64 Brown, $2,900.00

This premium-quality 1955 doubled die Lincoln cent is a nice chocolate brown example of a rare coin that many well-heeled Lincoln penny enthusiasts try to get their hands on. This piece sold for $100 less than the other MS 64 brown specimen graded by PCGS above. Again, factors as seemingly minor as listing times can make a world of difference in final bid price.

#9 -- 1909-S VDB Lincoln Cent Raw, $2,750.00

It’s always a surprise to see a nice, BU 1909-S VDB like this outside of a third-party slab. This coin exhibits incredible, concentric rainbow toning and is just a real beauty of a coin to behold. Obviously, when dealing with toning on a coin that’s often counterfeited, the cautious coin collector will look out for both signs of doctoring with the toning and the more pressing concern – is this coin legitimate?

#10 -- 1936 Lincoln Cent PCGS Proof 65 Red CAC Designated, $2,650.00

The top 10 portion of this list of most valuable Lincoln cents is wrapped up with this satin finish proof. 1930s proofs don’t often seem to have the wide collector base that business-strike specimens enjoy, but that’s no matter here. This beauty of a coin still shines, both literally and figuratively, in every respect. Remember, only 5,569 proof Lincoln cents were made in 1936, and they remain a scarce collectible to this day.
