1914 Barber Quarter
Coin Info
While mintage figures for Barber quarters in 1914 did not approach the highs of the late 1890s and early 1900s, significantly more quarters were made in 1914 than in any of the years prior to that point. While that makes the availability of 1914 quarters a little greater than for slightly older Barber quarters, 1914 quarters are still deemed as being relatively tougher than most other dates in the series.
Here’s a rundown of mintages and values of 1914 Barber quarters:
-
1914 – 6,244,230; $13
-
1914-D – 3,046,000; $13
-
1914-S – 264,000; $135
-
1914 proof – 380; $900
*Values are for coins in a grade of Good-4, unless otherwise noted.
The 1914-S Barber quarter is a semi-key date that is considerably more expensive than the majority of other Barber quarters from the teens, thanks to a lower mintage. Of note is that the 1914 proof Barber quarter is also more expensive and had a much lower mintage than in the previous year. While buying the 1914-S Barber quarter is necessary to complete a business-strike set of Barber quarters, most collectors skip out on purchasing proof specimens.
U.S. Mint Chief Engraver Charles E. Barber designed the Barber quarter, which was first released in 1892. The quarter would be produced for 25 years before the design was retired in 1916.
