2003 American Silver Eagle

2003 American silver eagles very popular one-ounce bullion coins with a fineness of .999, which makes them virtually pure. While categorically defined as bullion coins, American silver eagles actually have a large following of coin collectors, who appreciate the coin for its large size (40.6 millimeter diameter) and beautiful design, which pays homage to the Walking Liberty design by Adolph A. Weinman, which was on the half dollar from 1916 through 1947. 

All 2003 American silver eagles were minted at the West Point mint in New York. Two varieties were made that year – the uncirculated version, which is a favorite of bullion investors (as this type can be had for only a slight premium over silver melt values), and the proof specimen, which has a value about $20 greater than the coin’s melt value. 8,495,008 uncirculated examples were made in 2003 while 747,831 proof specimens were made that same year.

Whichever type of American silver eagle you prefer, be sure you check carefully for examples that are free of splotchy toning, fingerprints, nicks, or other imperfections. While each American silver eagle is in generally great shape when struck at the mint, many of these coins have been mishandled by individuals outside the mint, mainly as a result of being removed from U.S. Mint packaging. Most remaining specimens, however, are in great condition and represent the bulk of available product.
